There are people I think about often and contact rarely. From the inside, that gap is not indifference. It is a Tuesday.
A name arrives while I am carrying groceries, answering a message, or trying to remember why I walked into the room. I think, I should call her. The thought is sincere. It is also extremely easy to lose.
And somewhere, at least one person I have not called may be assuming I do not think about her.
The silence looks different from the other side
From the inside, my silence looks like laundry, work, an appointment, and a busy Tuesday. From the other side, it just looks like silence.
The answer is not to become a perfect correspondent. Most of us do not need another system that turns affection into a backlog. We need a small place to catch the thought before ordinary life closes over it.
Keep this partWrite down the person and the reason they crossed your mind.
Keep the reason, not a report
“Aunt June” may not be enough to bring the moment back. “Aunt June — her peach jam” is. “Daniel — heard that song from the old apartment” is. You are not writing a report. You are keeping the little hook that pulled someone into your head before you forget why they came to mind.
Then choose one or two people for this Tuesday. Not everyone. Not the oldest name. The person the moment makes easiest to contact.
Make the next hello smaller
A call can be a text. A text can be a photograph with one sentence. “This made me think of you” is allowed to be the entire message. Reaching out does not need to justify the time that passed before it.
No relationship-management system. No streaks. No backlog of people you are failing to love correctly. Just a place for the name, the reason, and the next small hello.
Today, I am calling my sister.
